Saving pets, enriching lives

To Michelson Found Animals, philanthropy is an opportunity to focus funds, resources, and business acumen towards giant, solvable problems. It’s through the programs below that we champion pets in our world.

Who We Are

Michelson Found Animals (MFA) is a leading animal well-being non-profit that believes people and pets are better together. Generously funded by Dr. Gary Michelson and Alya Michelson, MFA operates a range of programs, including community partnerships, catalytic grants, impact investments, and education and advocacy initiatives that share a common goal: to champion pets at every point they intersect with our society. MFA has helped more than 8 million pets since it was founded in 2005.

What We Do

Strategic Initiatives

Our Strategic Initiatives address societal issues closest to our hearts, often intersecting human and animal needs. We understand these issues are complicated, and consciously enter them through partnerships with specialized human service organizations to develop truly additive and collaborative programs. We don’t have all the answers to these complicated problems. We do, however, have the people, knowledge and will to help improve the lives of people and pets everywhere.

Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative

The Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative was created to build a stronger and more pet-inclusive rental housing industry. To invigorate the initiative, Michelson Found Animals Foundation teamed up with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) to commission research to better understand pet-related housing issues and find the right solutions to help keep pets and people together. From this research, the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative develops resources, partnerships, and actionable tools to increase the availability of truly pet-inclusive rental housing.

Better Neighbor Project

Michelson Found Animals believes that everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has the right to the joy of pets. Keeping pets and families together is at the core of the Better Neighbor Project (BNP) vision. In collaboration with community and civic partners, BNP provides direct and indirect support to pet owners from historically marginalized communities to assist them with the challenges that come with pet ownership and to make pet care more equitable and accessible. BNP supports other organizations, both human and animal, in their pet related initiatives.

Return to Home

Return to Home is a critical program in all sheltering organizations that focuses on reuniting lost/stray animals with their rightful owners versus attempting to find alternate placement, such as adoption, transfer or rescue. The majority of lost/stray animals entering sheltering organizations already have a home and family that cares for them. Return to Home programming is the easiest and least expensive manner of saving lives, which is why it should be a priority for all animal sheltering agencies.

Spay and Neuter Initiative

MFA’s Spay and Neuter Initiative (SNI) supports strategic community and policy-led spay and neuter efforts to increase the efficiency and availability of life-saving programs throughout Los Angeles. In partnership with the Erika & Robert Brunson Fund, and in honor of their dedication to animal well-being, this initiative focuses on identifying and workshopping gaps in innovation and championing self-sustaining goals for incremental change in spay and neuter outcomes.

Philanthropic Investments

Money can’t solve all the world’s problems. When used strategically, however, it can create systems, opportunities and incentives for real solutions. This is why all of our Philanthropic Investments require more than a 1:1 return. We critically analyze and expect our investments to continuously grow, develop lasting impact, and help millions of people and pets for years to come.

Scientific Research

In 2008, Found Animals launched the $75M Michelson Prize & Grants in Reproductive Biology program to incentivize research and rapidly develop a single-dose, nonsurgical sterilant for cats and dogs. We envision a world in which this product is widely available, helping to eliminate shelter euthanasia of healthy, adoptable companion animals and reduce populations of free-roaming cats and dogs. To date, we have committed nearly $20M in Michelson Grants to more than 40 projects worldwide.
