Together in Action: Relief Efforts for People and Pets Impacted by the LA Wildfires

In the face of disaster, the power of compassion shines through. As the Los Angeles wildfires have displaced communities, animals and pet parents find themselves caught in a place of uncertainty. Recognizing this urgent need, Michelson Found Animals' Better Neighbor Project (BNP), in partnership with Greater Good Charities (GGC), united to provide vital relief to pets and their families. Together, we have delivered hope and much-needed resources and supplies to those affected and are committed to the well-being of those impacted by this crisis.

The Severity of the LA Wildfires: A Crisis for People and Pets

The LA wildfires have left a devastating trail, impacting thousands of families and their pets. For pet parents, the challenges are multifaceted. Beyond the emotional toll of evacuating their homes, many face the logistical hurdles of finding shelter that accommodates pets and securing enough food and supplies to keep their animals healthy and safe. Animal shelters and rescue organizations have also been stretched to their limits as they work tirelessly to care for pets that have been separated from their owners or rescued from fire-affected areas.In moments like these, the need for support is overwhelming. That’s why we’re here – to ensure that no pet is left hungry and no family has to face these challenges alone.

A Collective Impact: Better Neighbor Project and Greater Good Charities

Since the beginning of the wildfires, the BNP and Greater Good teams have mobilized swiftly to meet the needs of pets and their families. Here’s what we’ve accomplished together so far:

• Distributed more than 66,000 pounds of pet food: Thanks to incredible donations from Greater Good and the tireless efforts of staff and volunteers, pet owners and rescue organizations across LA County have received essential supplies to keep their animals nourished and healthy.
• Received 35 tons of donated pet food: Greater Good has been a cornerstone of this relief effort, providing not only the food but also logistical support to ensure it reaches those in need. Their team has joined us on the ground, assisting with transport and event coordination to maximize our impact.
• Participated in large-scale recovery events across LA County: Our teams have been on the front lines, hosting and joining events where pet owners can pick up supplies, ask questions, and feel supported during this challenging time. These events have been a beacon of hope, creating a sense of community and solidarity.
• Donated pet supplies to more than 40 nonprofit organizations: Recognizing the critical role that animal shelters,rescues and pop-up donation sites play in disaster response, we’ve worked to ensure they have the supplies needed to care for displaced pets and their parents. From food to beds and beyond, these donations have been a lifeline for organizations on the front lines, both pet rescues and human services organizations.

At a recent event at SoFi stadium in partnership with The Chargers, the BNP team met the Polmateer family, who lost their home in the Palisades fire. Through that event, the family learned of MFA’s Wildfire Relief Day at Annenberg PetSpace, and was able to bring their newly adopted puppy, Apollo, in for a much-needed bath and basic vet care to ensure he, and the whole family, was comfortable and given the support needed while they navigate their next steps.

Ashley and Apollo’s story reminds us why these efforts matter. Thanks to our incredible partners, volunteers, and supporters, families impacted by the wildfires are getting the care and supplies they need to keep their pets safe and healthy.

The Heart Behind the Effort

None of this would be possible without the dedication and compassion of our volunteers. From packing pet bags at our warehouse to distributing supplies at recovery events, these incredible individuals have poured their hearts into this effort. Whether seasoned veterans of disaster relief or first-time volunteers, their contributions have made a world of difference.
