Celebrating World Spay Day: Launching Our Spay & Neuter Initiatives Resource Center

On February 25, we proudly join the global community in celebrating World Spay Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent overpopulation and promote their health and well-being. This year, Michelson Found Animals (MFA) is excited to mark the occasion by launching our new Spay & Neuter Initiatives Resource Center, a comprehensive hub designed to connect pet families, animal welfare organizations, and communities with vital resources and information.

A Legacy of Impact

For over 15 years, MFA has been dedicated to tackling pet overpopulation. We’ve contributed more than $10 million in grants to spay and neuter initiatives across the country. Through our Spay & Neuter Initiative (SNI), powered by the Robert & Erika Brunson Fund (REBF), we’ve partnered with organizations to provide affordable services, reduce the number of unwanted litters, and promote responsible pet ownership.

In 2024 alone, SNI has made incredible strides:

  • $1.3 million in grants provided crucial financial assistance to pet families in need.
  • Over $125,000 in funding supported 40 community clinics offering free spay/neuter services in Los Angeles.
  • Partnered with Animal Balance to launch high-quality, high-volume (HQHVSN) clinics for Los Angeles Animal Services, allocating $278,000 to provide spay/neuter support to shelter animals and pets in foster care.
  • Awarded CAMP Clinics a $1 million grant, supporting the opening of a new community clinic in 2025 and creating a national training center for veterinarians and veterinary technicians to expand spay/neuter services nationwide.

Last year, our founders, Dr. Gary K. Michelson, and Alya Michelson, along with the Brunson Fund, received the Pioneer Award from CAMP Clinics at their gala, where Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass celebrated their groundbreaking contributions to animal welfare.

A Message of Gratitude

“Our mission would not be possible without the vision and generosity of Dr. Gary Michelson and Alya Michelson,” said Jana Brennan, MFA’s Spay & Neuter Initiative Program Manager. “Their passionate commitment to animals and the people who love them has made it possible to expand access to spay and neuter services, empowering communities and creating a brighter future for pets everywhere.”
