Roughly 6-8 million animals enter animal shelters every year in the United States. Of these, only half will find new, forever homes.

Adopting

At Found Animals® we encourage you to visit your local animal care center to adopt your new best friend. Why? Because many shelter pets were once owned by individuals or families and were relinquished to a shelter through no fault of their own. Animal care centers have a variety of pets from Beagles to Bunnies to Burmese cats - many who are well-socialized, healthy and happy. By adopting, you are helping animal care centers reduce the number of pets that are euthanized - about 3-4 million every year – and saving a life at the same time.

In your community, you may find reputable breeders who are cognizant of the pet over-population problem and breed responsibly. However, with so many relinquished pets, you will also find a rescue group for just about every breed of cat and dog. A rescue group in your area will usually have pets ranging in age from puppies and kittens to senior pets.

Buying

Potential pet owners have many options when deciding where to obtain their next pet. That includes purchasing a pet from a pet store. While some pet stores feature pets from a local animal care center, many purchase their pets from puppy mills. A puppy mill is a commercial breeding kennel that houses several adult dogs for the purposes of producing litters of puppies for sale. Puppy mills have made national news over the last several years because of the less-than-adequate standard of care puppies and adults may receive while in a mill. By purchasing a pet from a puppy mill, potential owners are adding to the pet overpopulation problem.

For more information on how to locate an animal care center in your area, we encourage you to use our Adopt Me section of our site and search using your zip code.  You’ll find adoptable pets in your area and the locations they can be found.  If you need further options, we also recommend Petfinder or Adopt-A-Pet.  If you’re in the LA-area, please come visit us in person at one of our two adoption centers – Adopt & Shop or the Cat Adoption Center at SEAACA.
