How Kate found Lily & Luna:

Last spring, Brian and his wife Kate were heartbroken when they lost their 17-year-old calico, Tabitha. Tabitha had originally been Brian’s cat, but had become a much-loved member of the family. She was there during the Northridge earthquake, when Brian & Kate married and for the birth of their son, Evan.

As spring turned to summer, Brian and Kate found that they not only missed Tabby; they missed having a cat in general. They longed for the pitter-patter of kitty pads on their hardwood floors. So, they decided that a good end-of-summer activity for Kate and Evan would be to find a new kitty! The family decided that two kitties would be best, so they could keep each other company when the humans were at work/school.

Kate began the search online but only hit dead-ends. Few of the ads provided the basic information Kate was looking for, such as kitten age and gender. Kate then turned to Los Angeles Animal Services website, and found a database that provides photos and sorts by animal type, age, gender, and shelter location. Soon, the family had created a list of kittens they wanted to meet.

As an added bonus, Kate learned that Found Animals Foundation was running a “Summer Buddies” special in conjunction with LA Animal Services, which would cover the cost of the second kitty! Kismet.

It was at the beautiful East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys that Kate and Evan found the kittens they were looking for: Luna, an 8-week-old gray & white kitten, and Lily, an 18-week-old calico!

Naming Lily & Luna

About a month before the kitten shopping began in earnest, Kate & Evan starting kicking around kitten names. Names bandied about included but were not limited to: Cherry, Maeby, Artemis, Trillian, Amy, Sparkle, Lola, Mango, Harlow, Spritz, Coco, Storm, Chaos, and, last but not least, Tawny Kittayn. The family finally agreed that the kitties would be named Maeby and Coco.

Shortly before adoption day arrived, Kate & Evan suddenly changed their minds about the names. They became disenchanted with Maeby and Coco, as well as every other name on the preliminary list! It was then that the names Lily and Luna popped into Evan’s head. They are both character names from the Harry Potter books… and they just happened to fit the new kitties perfectly.
