"Save a Stray for the Holidays" & Find Your Diamond In The "Ruff" at any of 14 Los Angeles Animal Care Centers
LOS ANGELES (December 2, 2009) - Found Animals Foundation will host their second annual “Save A Stray For The Holidays” adoption event on Saturday, December 19th, 2009 from 9am-2pm. The unique and unparalleled Los Angeles-wide event will unfold simultaneously at 14 City and County animal care center locations; this will mark the first time such a feat has been accomplished. Each location will reduce adoption fees, including microchip and spay/neuter surgery fees, for the special program. Hundreds of animals will be available and trained “matchmakers” will be on hand to help visitors find the perfect pet.

In addition to delivering a wide range of live-saving benefits for Los Angeles shelter animals, “Save A Stray For The Holidays” also champions a significant nationwide message. The event highlights the millions of wonderful animals available for adoption from the municipal shelter system each year. Due to tremendous public misconception that these animals are undesirable (only approximately 50% make it out alive), coupled with minimal awareness in regard to shelter locations, these facilities are consistently overcrowded and underfunded. As a result, many centers are forced to put down animals simply for the lack of space.

Aimee Gilbreath, Executive Director of Found Animals, noted that there are many ways to improve this situation. “The public can make a difference – by adopting their next pet from an animal shelter and making sure to spay and neuter,” said Gilbreath. “We think the public will be shocked to learn that nearly four million dogs and cats are dying every year in U.S. animal shelters. Through this event we hope to educate L.A. residents and demonstrate by example that it pays to adopt from your local municipal shelter. By choosing to adopt, you save the life of the animal you take home, the one that now has space at the shelter, and the one that was never bred,” she added.

Found Animals will include special gifts for all new adoptees. Anyone who adopts a pet at the event will receive the amazing professional services of the Found Animals staff and volunteers. The organization also will provide crucial materials, such as new pet owner manuals, to make the transition to new surroundings more comfortable for both the pets and their new parents.
