Over 1,400 Diamonds in the “Ruff” Adopted

Found Animals Foundation’s Spectacular "Save a Stray for the Holidays" Adoption Event at 14 Los Angeles Animal Care Centers Is a Huge Success

LOS ANGELES (January 21, 2010) - Found Animals Foundation’s second annual "Save A Stray For The Holidays" adoption event found homes for over 445 animals on December 19, 2009 and over 1,400 animals during the holidays. The single day event garnered a 120% increase in adoptions compared to 2008, while the overall adoption period saw a 43% increase. The number of adoptions on December 19th alone broke single-day adoption records for both the City of Los Angeles Animal Services and the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

The unique Los Angeles-wide event unfolded simultaneously at 14 animal care center locations and was an unprecedented accomplishment. Each location reduced adoption fees, including microchip and spay/neuter surgery fees, for the special program. Hundreds of animals were available and trained "matchmakers" were on hand to help visitors find the perfect pet. Ultimately, the event highlighted the millions of wonderful animals available for adoption from the municipal shelter system each year.

Moreover, the event was featured on EXTRA, Good Day LA, KTLA, KNBC and KTTV, was mentioned in over 55 websites and magazines and promoted in all surrounding PETCO retail stores by their staff. The widespread attention and publicity the event generated helped drive a tremendous amount of traffic to the centers, where over 200 staff and volunteers were trained by Found Animals staff on customer service at animal care facilities.

"We are thrilled by the phenomenal success of this adoption event," noted Aimee Gilbreath, Executive Director of Found Animals. "Nearly four million dogs and cats are dying every year in U.S. animal shelters. Through events like 'Save A Stray' and the post adoption counseling we provide for new adopters, we're saving thousands of animals, transforming public opinion of shelters, and providing loving companions to people throughout Southern California and elsewhere. This is a rare situation in which everyone wins," she added.
