2008 was an important year for Found Animals. In a matter of months this small “start up” organization put itself on the map in a big way. Below are some of the past year’s highlights.
- Aimee Gilbreath accepts role as Executive Director, becoming the Foundation’s first full-time employee.
- Found Animals hosts its first adoption event, the Big Lick Adopt-a-thon & Ice Cream Social at the West Los Angeles Animal Care Center. More than 300 people attended, 43 animals were adopted including 28 dogs, 12 cats and 3 rabbits representing a 438% increase over the previous Saturday.
- Found Animals announces the Michelson Prize & Grants in Reproductive Biology offering $25 million for a non-surgical cat and dog sterilant as well as up to $50 million in grants to help further the research.
- The All American Tails Adopt-a-Pet Extravaganza and Pet Pit Bull Contest showcases “Ambassa-dogs” of the often misunderstood “pit bull” at the East Valley Animal Care Center as well as throughout Southern California. Over 450 people attended the event, 69 animals were adopted: 44 dogs– including 5 pit bulls and 25 cats, representing a 176% increase over the same Saturday in 2007.
- The first Found Animals LIVE Cam is launched, promoting “Adopt, Don’t Shop” for the Save a Stray for the Holidays event. Max Silva and Jason Lugavere, of Current TV host the ceremony, awarding the adopters with “shelter star” pups at Healthy Spot in Santa Monica.
- The Foundation’s Microchip Program donated 40,000 Avid brand microchips to L.A. area shelters, including SEAACA, L.A. County, spcaLA, and Clinico.
- Ongoing financial and strategic support was provided to two partner organizations: Clinico and FixNation.
