Found Animals Foundation, Inc. (Found Animals) is a privately funded 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to minimizing shelter euthanasia. Found Animals creates programs designed to reduce shelter intake, increase live release rates and focuses on developing cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable animal welfare business models.
As a private operating foundation, the primary focus of Found Animals is on developing in-house programs and services. Grant making activities are limited and unsolicited proposals are not considered.
With an estimated 6 - 8 million dogs and cats entering U.S. shelters and approximately 50% of these animals being euthanized yearly, most for the simple lack of a home, Found Animals focuses on a select group of strategic priorities. These initiatives include:
Sterilization programs focused on ensuring accessible, affordable services to increase spay/neuter rates and decrease the number of animals entering the shelter system.
- $75M Michelson Prize & Grants program for innovation in non-surgical sterilization
- $1M+ in grant & partnership commitments for high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter in Los Angeles
Adoption events encouraging the public to visit their local shelter and insuring they have an exceptional experience, proving to the public that adoption IS the best option for acquiring a pet.
Resources to ensure lifelong, loving relationships between pets and their people.
- Microchipping program provided ~40,000 free chips to Los Angeles area shelters last year
Outreach & Education
- Promotions to encourage “Adopt – Don’t Shop”
- Public awareness campaigns designed to raise knowledge of various issues and/or animals available in local shelters (i.e. Found Animals live webcams)
- Contests, demonstrations and displays to spotlight particular issues or breeds and to create necessary breed awareness (i.e. "bullie" breeds) and positive press
Found Animals works to prove each program sustainable within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Once these programs have been proven in Los Angeles they will be applied in other communities.
