What Do HSUS and Mickey Mouse Have in Common?
Last week, a handful of the Found Animals team traveled to sunny Florida to take part in the Animal Care Expo 2011, presented by the Humane Society of the United States.
This year’s Expo took place in Orlando, Florida at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. Animal care professionals, animal volunteers, and animal welfare organizations, like us, came from all over the world to be a part of HSUS’s Expo, the largest international education conference, trade show and training conference in the fields of animal care and control, rescue, and emergency services. We found out that over 1600 animal lovers were there, including Mickey Mouse and Goofy, of course.
What an amazing experience! Our gratitude and appreciation goes out to HSUS for making this wonderful event happen. Now in its 20th year, this four-day conference offered over 70 educational workshops and over 175 exhibition booths of the latest products and services.
From street dogs in India to feral cats in the U.S. there was a plethora of animal welfare and pet care information available at Expo; and Found Animals was your eyes and ears and snouts on the ground. We brought you live twitter updates throughout the event, so if you missed any of the fun facts (like that rats make great pets and can be trained to use a litter box…) check @FoundAnimalsOrg to see what you missed. Plus, you told us which topic you were most interested in, and we listened. Executive Director Aimee Gilbreath attended your most desired session, “Understanding the Pit Bull Placebo: How the Break the Cycle of Discrimination” and will be bringing you an eye-opening report this Thursday of everything she learned. For example, did you know there is no such thing as a pit bull? It’s not even a breed!
Make sure to check in this Thursday to read Aimee’s blog to learn more. She guarantees it will change the way we think about pit bulls. We can’t wait!
