The SPAY4LA mobile clinic has been operating in south Los Angeles since September 2010 and has spayed & neutered over 9,000 pets since opening it’s door to the public. The mission of SPAY4LA is to provide free spay and neuter to the communities that provide the most intake to city animal shelters by bringing the clinic to their communities.

When Spay4LA first started, the mobile unit provided free spay and neuter surgeries to two zip codes in south Los Angeles and operated only 3 days a week. Now the Spay4LA mobile unit provides free surgeries to 4 zip codes and operates 5 days a week. Thanks to a new grant from the Best Friends Animal Society, the mobile unit added zip codes 90003 and 90037 to its schedule. To help promote the services available to the community, Spanish radio, TV personality and animal lover Luz Maria Briseño brought her puppy Bella to get spayed by SPAY4LA veterinarian Dr. Luiz Lizaraga. She talked about it on the radio the week leading up to the big day and invited her listeners to come out and join us so they could learn more about how easy it is to spay or neuter your pet and talk to Dr. Lizaraga about the importance of the procedure. It was the 1st day for the clinic to operate from its new location at the Expo center parking lot (corner of MLK Blvd and Vermont) and the community came out to meet and greet Ms. Briseño and her dog Bella as well to find out about the free services available to them. Bella’s day was a complete success as she was taken to the clinic where she was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped with the other 28 pets that were on board the clinic that day and was returned to her anxious mother later that afternoon.

Luz Maria hung around the clinic the whole afternoon talking to her fans and telling them the importance of neutering and spaying their pets and providing tips on pet nutrition. We thank her for being such a great ambassador to spay and neuter and for leading by example for her listeners. She is considered a great friend to the clinic and the community.

SPAY4LA currently provides free spay and neuter in South Los Angeles to residents of zip codes 90001, 90003, 90018, and 90037 as well as low-cost vaccines.  They also provide low-cost spay and neuter to people who live outside of those service areas, but spaces are limited.
