SPAY4LA, the mobile spay & neuter clinic, first began operating in South Los Angeles in September 2010. In a little over 2 years they have provided low cost and free spay and neuter surgeries for 10,000 pets! We want to congratulate Spay4LA on their 10,000th surgery!

The mission of Spay4LA continues to be providing free spay and neuter to the communities that need it most. Spay4LA brings their mobile clinic to those communities in Los Angeles that account for the highest numbers of animal intakes to city shelters.

On October 12, at the South Los Angeles animal shelter, pit-bull puppy Corbata (Neck-tie in Spanish) was the 10,000th pet that has been sterilized at SPAY4LA. In addition to the free spay & neuter and microchip, Corbata and her brother Guardian (surgery #10,001) received a gift basket with toys, flea medication, 2 vouchers for free vaccines, a water bowl, pet shampoo, and a few other surprises.

dog owners standing with vet techs and two pitbull puppiesJose Rivera (Corbata’s proud owner) said that he is very appreciative of SPAY4LA and thinks that what they are doing in their community is very important. He told the staff that strays are prevalent where he lives. He admits that he couldn’t have afforded the cost of neutering his dogs if not for SPAY4LA and its funders and thanked the staff for taking care of his pets on his way out.

Clinic manager Sandy Sagastume admits that it’s been a long road to spay and neuter so many pets, but says that she has met a lot of great people (and pets) along the way. “I’m just happy to be able to provide some relief. Most of the people I speak to here want to do the right thing by sterilizing their pet, but just can’t afford it. Thankfully, SPAY4LA can help.”

In addition to free targeted spay and neuter, they also provide low-cost vaccines and other basic wellness services. Low-cost spay and neuter is also available to people who live outside of those service areas (spaces are limited). Call (888) SPAY-4-LA or visit www.188Spay4LA.org to make an appointment or for more info.

Spaying and neutering makes a big difference. Studies show that one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in just six years. One unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce a mind boggling  370,000 kittens in six years. By spaying & neutering you are guaranteeing that your pet will not be contributing to the homeless pet population.

It’s great to see so many people taking advantage of the cheap spaying and neutering we have around here.
